Amblyopia: Causes, Symptoms, and Effective Treatment Options

Amblyopia, commonly known as “lazy eye,” is a vision development disorder where one eye fails to achieve normal visual acuity, even with prescription glasses or contact lenses. It typically begins during infancy or early childhood and can lead to long-term visual impairment if not treated promptly. Unlike other eye conditions, amblyopia is not caused by structural abnormalities of the eye but rather by poor communication between the brain and the affected eye.

The condition develops when the brain favors one eye over the other, causing the weaker eye to be underused. Over time, the brain may begin to ignore signals from the weaker eye entirely. This imbalance can occur due to several reasons. The most common causes include strabismus (misaligned eyes), refractive errors (significant differences in vision between both eyes), and deprivation issues such as cataracts blocking vision during early development.
